Creativity is the ability to make new things happen. It's essential to the engineer seeking a solution; the mathematician approaching a difficult formula; the historian investigating both sides of a story; and the scientist creating a hypothesis and diving into an experiment. But it's also vital to any business trying to stay ahead of the competition and create a unique identity in its market.
And the best way to do that is by encouraging a culture of creativity. This is no easy feat, however. It requires a safe space for experimentation, where ideas are encouraged even when they seem counterintuitive and "outside the box," and where small failures are seen as learning opportunities. This is often easier said than done, but businesses can take steps to foster a creative workplace and reap the rewards.
Freelancing is one of the most common ways to cultivate creativity, and not just for artists. Every freelancer has a different path to their work: some start out in full-time employment and then move into working for themselves; others build a stable, steady client base while still maintaining a part-time job; and others skip the corporate ladder completely and jump straight into running their own businesses. But what all of these paths have in common is that they allow for a great deal of freedom to explore and embrace creativity, whether that's finding new solutions to problems in their own business or life, or simply using a variety of tools, apps and resources to help them produce their best work.
Another important aspect of freelancing is that it gives people a direct link between their efforts and the money they receive for their work. In fact, this is one of the reasons why many employees become freelancers in the first place: it's a way to see exactly how much they're worth and how their hard work pays off, while gaining control over their schedule, work life balance and financial security.
Ultimately, the most important factor to consider when embracing creativity is that it works best as a continual practice. It's a never-ending process of learning, growing and improving, just like any other professional endeavor. The best companies know this, which is why they invest in innovation teams that are made up of employees with diverse working styles, experience and skill-sets to bring in new perspectives on old problems and new ones as well.
In addition to helping the company stay ahead of the competition, innovated products and services give customers new reasons to come back for more -- which in turn boosts brand loyalty and customer retention.
So while the benefits of embracing creativity may seem obvious, it's still not always easy to pull off in a corporate setting. But with a little encouragement, the right team and the right mindset, it can be easier than ever to embrace your creativity and find the best version of you possible.
